Let's Start With This One...

In a world filled with Brexit nightmares, it comes as no surprise that the world of horror films is ever-growing and getting ever great. With ghouls and goblins out to get us throughout October, there is one film that is terrorising all with its graphic scenes and horrific storyline. The feature, Midsommar, out today on DVD, Blu-ray and digitally, captured audiences around the world and rightly so!

Deciding to head on a trip to Sweden to get closer to her boyfriend (Jack Reynor), Dani (Florence Pugh) finds herself being dragged into a cult following that ends up being the stuff of true nightmares. After getting an email from her sister, which leads to a family tragedy, the trip is supposed to be a relaxing backpacking trip for the pair and his friends (featuring Will Poulter). However, it is anything but when a tribe leads them into a Swedish forest, causing heartache, panic and above all else the undeniability that some of them may not be leaving.

In many ways, director Ari Aster has called upon the likes of The Wicker Man, to draw in the story for this monster of feature. With more horror films placing characters in situations that seem to real to be true but could happen, the stories are more frantic to watch. There is no denying that when watching Midsommar, you can’t help but want to grab the cast and beg them to leave what they are about to get caught up in. You want to shake them and tell them to run.

Yet, throughout watching, you know that this is not going to be the case and the more they delve into it, the harder it is to watch. As the gore grows, the gripping nature does as well. Something that as a viewer is a horrific realisation to watch. There is nothing that can stop you from doing so though. A clever feature element for all those involved, but especially that of the directors towards the audience.

Unsettling in every way, the casting, storyline and close-ups lead to a film that shouldn’t be so enjoyable to watch. For a horror film though, it works in every possible way. The actors stand out and make you feel for them, apart from those within the cult. The story has been crafted to keep you guessing, even when you can see what might come next. There is so much in which works that it leaves you not wanting to watch more, but also wanting to delve into Aster’s world just a little bit longer. Something that marks a good film that deserves all the attention.

When you hear people mention Scarface nowadays, it is mostly in quotation. The figure who ruled the 80s gangster scene is now more of an icon than he has ever been before. Something that is sure to grow with the re-release of the film on DVD, Blu-Ray and digitally today.

Undoubtedly the film that made Al Pacino’s career, the feature follows Tony Montana, as he tries to grow his name and reputation in the world of drugs, sex and violence. With Michelle Pfeiffer starring alongside him, the actor puts on a convincing display as a mad man, looking to rise to the top. Yet, it doesn’t make the film the strongest feature to come out of the 80s.

Although there are several quotes that we could shout, there seems to be a lack of actual story or need for a feature. Even after all these years. Montana isn’t a character built to be liked and in the face of features such as The Godfather, it just doesn’t stand up. While people would seek to see more from the later, not many would ask for a sequel to Scarface.

The feature is one that is watchable mostly for the stars that feature within it. They are the reason to watch. You need to see them build their early reputations to witness how they have changed over the years. Their progression is enjoyment and without Scarface, we wouldn’t have been able to have seen it.

With a classic film figure leading the way, Scarface will always be a cult hit. However, if you haven’t seen it before, there isn’t much you are missing out on. Watch for the quotes and the acting but be warned there isn’t much else to see.

Not everyone enjoys watching scary movies or shows at Halloween. Often, in fact, the people who celebrate it the most can’t, being too little to fall into a festival of ghouls and gore.

This doesn’t mean though that you or they can’t enjoy a whole host of films and TV treats. Over the years there have been many that make the scares a little less scary. I have taken a little look in my cupboard to find a few I would recommend that everyone can enjoy.

Grab the sweets, turn off the lights and snuggle up on the 31st with these delights:

Edward Scissorhands: One of my favourite films, this film is a mixture of both Halloween and Christmas delights rolled into one. You won’t be able to not fall for Edward’s innocence.

The Descendants: With the third film having just launched on the Disney Channel, now is the perfect time to go back to the start. For the young ones, this will be like what Halloweentown was to us 90s kids.

The Addams Family: Go back in time and watch these classics for an afternoon of pure entertainment. Wednesday is my style icon and you will find me in my witch’s jumper and plaits to support her on the big day.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch: It could be the old one or the new one, but Sabrina is the witch to watch on Halloween. For me, it is the old one I will be watching, but either is perfect.

Hocus Pocus: If The Witches seems a little bit too scary, introduce this gorgeous set of witches instead. You will be wishing you had a broomstick as soon as you see it.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: There are moments in this show that can be terrifying, but it is a joy to watch 99% of the time. Buffy is also one of the most kickass characters of all time.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Whether you see it as a Halloween or Christmas film, there has never been a better time to pop on this animation. I think it is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to October, as you can enjoy it up until the end of January.

Stranger Things: Probably one of the best modern thrills on TV, this is the ultimate binge-watch series to fall into this Halloween. Start from the beginning and see how long it takes for you to finish the lot. I promise you it won’t take long.

With today being a Saturday, this may actually be a good list to have as a film marathon tonight. Get a hot chocolate, add a few extra treats and jump in a homemade fort for super comfort lovelies. Fighting over what to watch first will be the hardest part!

For many years, people knew Regina Hall as the loud, funny comedian from the Scary Movie franchise. This is changing though. With a fabulous turn in Girls Trip, the star has now created Support The Girls, out today on DVD and digitally. A feature that has been praised around the world and rightly so.

Directed and created by Andrew Bujaki, the man behind Funny Ha Ha, the film is a glorious telling of how the staff at a local sports bar decide to turn the tides on the world around them. Hall plays Lisa, the general manager of Double Whammies, who leads the waitresses and their daily duties.
With an optimistic attitude and outlook on life, Lisa soon finds that one-day changes that for her. Taking matters into her own hands, she protects her staff, who have long been forced to dress skimpily, in a battle against those around them.

Support The Girls takes audiences back. Back to a time, when there was a battle to be had. A time when cinema showed this and made sure everyone was listening. The women in the feature are like the fierce women that were in the 80s classics that still reign supreme today and Hall is the stand out one amongst them. Her fellow cast members are equally as brilliant though, with Hayley Lu Richardson, Dylan Gelula and Lea DeLaria owning the camera and storyline too.

Full of wit and humour, the film also mixes in devastation, with the tough home life Lisa is living with. As a bright and encouraging person, seeing this side of her shows that you never really know a person. A smart move on Bujaki’s part when it comes to showing that everyone is fighting something, even if they seem like they have it all together.

A film that is full of open and honest moments highlighting the tough world in which many women live in, Support The Girls is a modern movement that will make every viewer think. Hall and co are at their best throughout and Bujaki has made a clever feature that will stand the test of time.
