England Is Mine DVD Review

Good Morning Lovelies,

Gritty British films take a lot of time and thought to make. They are often features that stand out for being unique and not for being the most advertised or treated features.

After a long wait, England is Mine is out on DVD, but sadly it doesn’t make the cut like others. Going back to the 1970s, Manchester to be specific, the film captures the teenage years of Morrissey, before he shot to fame in The Smiths.

Played by Jack Lowden, the film also stars Jessica Brown Findley, as a duo who have so much potential but not enough story to project.  Without approval from the star himself or any of the band, the film lacks the iconic songs you may be listening out for, leaving just a glum feature in its wake.

Lowden is a great Star and a budding actor, but without the chance to show the full character he is missing that little bit of charm. However, he is the reason to watch this film. Mainly for the chance to show how dynamic and clever he is at every character he builds or shares with audiences.

Director Mark Gill has so much at his fingertips to play with, especially without the star looming over the production, but he never uses that, leaving a lacklustre script and feature, which is only funny in certain moments. He seems to make more of a teen angst piece than a biopic of epic scales.

Without the charm, flare and music, there really is not much going for a feature that could have been so much more. There so, I am giving it...

2 Stars
