Girlfriends Series One DVD Review

08:00:00

Good Morning Lovelies,

ITV have been keeping our winter filled to the max with brand new dramas. Amongst them was Kay Mellor’s new series, Girlfriends, a six-part series looking at the relationship and friendship between three very different women.

Played by Phyllis Logan, Miranda Richardson and Zoe Wanamaker, the series takes audiences through their different scenarios. As one faces a divorce, another faces a bereavement, all of which bring about issues including health, age and family matters. All of which presenting that no matter what they face, however, they remain the best of friends.

At times there are strong moments of laughter and love, soon followed by devastation and sadness, as the characters come to terms with what they have faced. Moments that Mellor is well known for creating in her scripts. However, whilst the story and the cast are strong, this one seems to be lacking where other recent Mellor shows have succeeded.

There is a sense that we aren’t always welcome into the characters lives as an audience and that makes for uncomfortable viewing. Plus, there are scenes throughout that bring down the tone or feel of what Mellor is known for. A deaths scene in episode two is a key example of this.

Whilst Wanamaker, Richardson and Logan should all be praised for bringing out some of their finest performances, the show's story fails to measure up to previous shows of theirs and Mellor’s. There so I am giving it…
