Blade Runner 2049 IMAX Review

Good Afternoon Lovelies,

Since 1999, a sequel to the 1982 cult hit Blade Runner has been in the works. Never though did the creators of it imagine that in 2017, 18 years later, would the sequel be taking over the world with it's out of this universe futuristic features.

Returning as Rick Deckard, Harrison Ford has been joined by Ryan Gosling, Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Jared Leto and Ana de Armas, to bring a whole new story to light. Set 30 years after the first film, Gosling plays K/Joe, a LAPD Blade Runner looking to find out what happened to those who used to protect the world before him.

Sent to destroy them, K finds himself wondering if he is really who he thinks he is when he is faced with the task of finding the child of a bioengineered woman, who is uncovered as Rachael, from the first film. After finding out that she was romantically linked to a previous Blade Runner, Ford’s Deckard, K sets out to find out what happened to the Blade Runner and the child he uncovers the couple had.

As a sequel to a film, it is one of the best around. Not relying too heavily on the plot or the motions of the first, it makes a name for itself and casts a new light on where Hollywood blockbusters have been failing for so long. If you want to do something well, make sure you know what audiences will never expect from it.

The LA landscape that everyone knows and loves changes from the moment the film begins. The world is now a place of farming. Both food and humanity, as humans are bioengineered and dropped onto the floor like pieces of meat, before being slaughtered if not fit for purpose. The food and the animals in the film are treated better than humans ever will be in fact.

Gosling and Ford share this in their acting and characters ways. Gosling’s K removes himself from all interactions with humans, apart from his LAPD boss Madam. Living on his own and with a Joi (de Armas) to keep him company, he is a lonely soul, who finds himself looking into the future with the return of Fords Deckard. Both actors work incredibly well together and provide audiences with a safe reassurance that they know what they are doing and how they are going to get the story to progress to a stage that audiences don’t expect.

Visually and musically it is a stunning feature. The speakers in the cinema I was watching it in could not handle the intense features, as the IMAX quality proved to be a little too strong for them, but that just added to the beauty of the film. Everything, from the women coming alive in the adverts on the buildings to the appearances of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, has been handled with such delicate care that they end up being the only rare pieces of humanity in a dark and thrilling world.

Viewing the film in IMAX 3D, it is easy to see every little detail. Every piece of scenery has been made from scratch, every dust filled screen appearance is a highlight that not everything is black and white and the sound literally rattles inside you.  For a sequel, it is simply beautiful.

Blade Runner 2049 has earned itself every top review that it has got and will continue to do for what I hope is a long time, with mine joining it with this…
