BFI LFF 2016: Letters From Baghdad Review

Last night after work I was feeling a bit down. I will admit that I didn’t really know why, but I just felt like I needed a holiday (Ireland I miss you) and some R&R. So when I was asked if I would like to review the BFI LFF film, Letters From Baghdad, I decided to have some me time and do so.
Telling the story of Gertrude Bell, a powerful woman who stood out in the British Empire for recreating and helpful to shape the Middle East with her friend Lawrence of Arabia. Her story is not one that many will be familiar with but it is one that definitely deserves to be told in schools.
Bell is a figure who used her power for good and with Tilda Swinton voicing the film, this power is brought to the front from the beginning to show audiences that this woman worked hard to make a place a home for many.
It shows a country in its full beauty and glory and makes audience members want to get up at the end of it and do something to help create change. You also want to go for walks across the Arabian desert and see what Bell helped to change and create.
The film is a perfect piece to show those that history needs to be brought up to date and tell the stories of these incredible people who helped to shape it. Bell is a now a figure that I hope will now be on many influential lists and hopefully her work will finally be recognised.
I needed this film so much and it gave me the confidence to come to work and shine. There so I am giving it...
