Seven Drunken Nights: The Story Of The Dubliners Review

00:05:00

In our house, anything Irish is a winner! Therefore, when I was kindly invited to review Seven Drunken Nights: The Story Of The Dubliners at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage, we couldn’t wait to be transported back to the bars and music that fill the streets of Dublin whilst staying at home! Grab a Guinness and read my full review right here!

Good Morning Lovelies,

My heart runs on many things that it loves. One of them being Ireland. Dublin specifically! I have been in love with the city since the moment I stepped foot in it at 21. Since then, I try to visit at least once a year, as I find it to be like no other place on earth. The people are lovely, the views are stunning and the music is electric. There is no other place quite like it to me.

When I am at home, I often have moments of pure sadness when I realise that I can’t be there. So, I try to bring little pieces of the city into my life in other ways. Whether it be by hanging a Dublin inspired piece of artwork or adding a new piece to my Guinness collection, I will do all that I can to make sure I am never not without a daily dose of Dublin.

Therefore, when I was kindly invited to come along and watch Seven Drunken Nights: The Story Of The Dubliners, I couldn’t say no. Capturing the classic story of the iconic Irish band, The Dubliners, the show transports audiences right into the heart of the city, through the iconic songs the band shared with the world, all performed by an amazing cast of real Irish musicians.

Set in the iconic O’Donoghue’s pub, which is a real place in Dublin, the show sees the cast coming together to present hits including Whiskey in the Jar, The Irish Rover and Rocky Road to Dublin, that even those who don’t know much about them will be able to recognise or learn in a matter of moments.

Presenting the real beating heart of any Dublin pub, the show makes you feel like you really are sitting in one, with a good hearty pint of Guinness, listening to the folk stories and music that make being in an Irish pub so special. Having been performing the show for over 50 years, it feels fresh and exciting. The kind that makes you want to stand on top of a table and dance along, like any good Irish night out does.

Something you could feel that the whole of the audience was feeling, as everyone looked rapt in the story and the music throughout. It made our hearts soar, as we got emotional, through the way that the songs brought about memories of our trips to the bright and beautiful emerald island. Even if we had never been to Dublin before, I think you would feel this, as the sons of Ireland story is a truly powerful one to behold.

If you are a visitor or lover of all things Irish, you will appreciate all of the little touches within the staging of the performance too that make it feel so authentic. The bag of Taytos, the pints of Guinness, the bottles of Jameson’s whiskey and of course, the best bit of all…the accents! As soon as you hear them sing, you just know you are in for a real Irish experience.

Seven Drunken Nights is a show like no other. It is all the best bits of the iconic band, wrapped up in a performative night out in the heart of Dublin city. Whether you have been to Ireland before or not, you will come away feeling so much lighter, as the joy that the Irish bring is really captured in this show in so many wonderful ways. It may have been going for 50 years already, but it definitely isn’t done yet! In fact, I think it will last for years to come yet and rightfully so!
