Freakier Friday Blu-Ray Review

00:00:00

Yesterday, the wonders of Disney worked their magic and brought us Freakier Friday on Blu-Ray and DVD! After falling head over heels for the first film when I was younger, the idea of being transported back in time to see how Jamie Lee Curtis’ and Lindsay Lohan’s characters had transformed over the years was something I was very excited to see at last!

Good Morning Lovelies,

Back when I was younger, Disney brought out a film that I could not stop watching. Freaky Friday, starring the 00s hero Lindsay Lohan and the iconic Jamie Lee Curtis, as a mother and daughter who find themselves trapped in each other's bodies. I would watch it again and again and not just because of my huge crush on Chad Michael Murray at the time.

So, when I heard that they were making a sequel, I was very excited. Bringing the classic plot up to date, Freakier Friday, captures Lohan’s Anna preparing for her wedding. However, after a psychic casts her magic on her, she soon finds herself facing a moment from her past reappearing, as she swaps bodies with her own daughter. Whilst her mum, played by Lee Curtis, swaps bodies with her future stepdaughter.

Both Lohan and Lee Curtis are on top form again, presenting their characters as if they have never left our lives. Giving off the same comedic horrors that they did in the original, the plot feels just as much fun as it did the first time around and that comes down to their dynamic partnership. You can tell as a viewer that they seriously care about each other and that comes off throughout in fantastic ways.

Even the new faces fit in perfectly, as Anna’s daughter, played by Julia Butters and her stepdaughter, portrayed by Sophia Hammons, are great additions to the cast, who equally match the brilliant natures of the two leading ladies. Whilst some may have been intimidated by their talents, these two are not, as they show just how powerful they are on their own.

As for the plot, whilst it contains the same tropes as the original, it presents new audiences with a fun cinematic experience. Working out whether Anna will have her dream wedding or not, older audiences will know what will happen but not be downheartened by it. There is actually a sense of real nostalgic joy from it. Something that younger audiences will catch on to, which I feel will lead to a resurge in the original, making it bigger and bigger.

Whilst the film doesn’t feel like it will lead to another feature, it presents a sense of real nostalgic magic that I love. All the characters are just as loveable as they were to begin with, including the newer faces, who feel like they were made for the world within the feature. As do the musical features within the film, which present off the ultimate rock vibes that the original did too.

Although you can’t escape the cheese of it, there is a wonder to be had from the film that makes it a real cinematic joy. With so much drama and intense viewings nowadays, it is nice to go back to good old family fun and this is something that Freakier Friday brings. A real sense of fun!
