My Family’s Ultimate Bread Heroes!
00:00:00Bread! You can’t help but love it! Whether it is the classic slice or the holy bagel, there is nothing quite like having a warm piece with your favourite toppings on top! For a long time I was fearful of the stuff but not anymore! Something that calls for a celebration, as my family have gathered our top kinds to share with you!
Good Morning Lovelies,
When I first started to be healthier, I cut out all kinds of bread. An act that was truly hard for me, as I could happily have chomped down on a whole loaf or baguette. I can remember so many good nights ending with a piece topped with the best toppings, such as melted butter or chocolate spread. The white and milk striped kind.
Cutting the food out made me scared of it for a long time, as my eating disorder gripped hold. To me it was evil. However, it wasn’t and thankfully with the help of my team I was able to eat it again. For me, there is nothing like a good bagel covered in hot runny honey, turning it into a glazed doughnut of sorts. Or a classic crumpet covered in jam. In fact, a jam sandwich is the ultimate winner to me.
There so, after much debating with my family, I thought I would share our ultimate bread heroes. They aren’t in any correct order but to us and our home, you just can’t beat these kinds of baked delights…
Bagels: Plain, cinnamon and raisin or herb topped, we love a bagel in our house. For me, I love them with jam or hot runny honey, which turns them into a glazed doughnut. I have them every week and then make me happy every time I do.
Crumpets: Everyone in the UK will know that these are a breakfast or supper staple. I can remember every Sunday night, the day we had our dinner super early, we would get crumpets for supper. Topped with melted butter, Marmite or warm chocolate spread, they are icons in every way.
A Classic Thick White Loaf: My mum has always said that thick is best and I believe her. A good, chunky, white loaf is a staple in our kitchen. Whether it be the packed or fresh kind. With lashings of butter, two slices can turn any dish into heaven on a plate with what is placed between them. Even on its own it is great!
A French Baguette: When I was little, my parents would push me around in the trolley in Tesco’s whilst I ate the soft bread inside a baguette. Never the crust, just the spongy centre. As I got older, I learnt to appreciate the wonder of its whole form. Especially on a Saturday morning when I used to eat meat, as the bread made a sausage sandwich even better.
A Panini: A staple in my school’s canteen, I used to love the warm ham and cheese or pizza filled kinds they offered. I actually miss them still to this day. I may have to trespass to see if I can get my hands on one if I can conquer my fears of the fillings! Simon Balle, hit me up!
Sourdough: We have a love hate relationship with sourdough in our house. We all love it but our hatred comes from not being able to make our own. My goal is to create a starter and get baking. Anyone got a recipe?
Tortilla Wraps: God, I just love a wrap! They remind me of school trips, quick snacks and homemade takeaways. If you offered me a sandwich or a filled wrap, I think we may all choose the wrap in our house. The soft texture just makes them so delicious.
Tiger Bread: You can’t beat a good old fashioned tiger loaf. The crispy top with the perfect patterns and spongy centre makes it a sandwich ruler. You just simply can’t beat the artistry that goes into making and enjoying it.
A Poppy Seed Bun: They aren’t often seen anymore but we all agreed in our house that a poppy seed bun was a must have on the list. My best friend Tessa can eat these plain if placed in front of her. The only fault we could find with these is that the seeds get stuck in your teeth.
Seeded Bread: Talking of seeds, there is something quite wonderful about a seeded loaf. Full of already packed flavour, a seeded slice is great with just butter or a good old hearty soup. This is a loaf for winter when soup and stew season is in.
A Crunchy Bread Roll: We are talking about the kind that goes everywhere. I mean the sort that leaves more mess than ever. Creates crumbs in your bra kind of thing. I used to love our local corner shops kind, which my mum would fill with sausages or bacon on a Saturday morning or chicken and cucumber for school. Perfection!
Granary Bread: I don’t know what it is but I do love a good old granary bread. Not as heavy as wholemeal or seeded, it has all the heart but on a gentler scale. Great for us
IBS sufferers.
Brioche Buns: My dad taught us the italian way to enjoy these buns. Fill them up with ice cream! Good old fashioned italian ice cream! He always said that a lemon ice was the best kind to enjoy them with, however, when I was in Sicily, I did love a cherry one in mine.
Finger Rolls/White Round Rolls: Whether these are enjoyed with hot dogs in them or icing sugar on top of them, you can’t beat a simple finger roll. They may seem small but they are certainly mighty in the bread aisle. Much like the finger roll, a white bread roll is just as true a staple! They go with anything and everything. They are just an icon. The Coco Chanel of the bread aisle shall we say.
Muffins: When I was a teenager, I went through a big stage of just wanted warm buttered muffins all the time. They were my kryptonite. I even got my dad into them, although my mum isn’t the biggest fan of them. They are just so moorish that one can easily lead to two.
Mini Bake At Home Petit Pains: Christmas time was when these bad boys would get broken out. Placed on the table for our evening buffet and used again the next day filled with turkey and leftovers, they just remind me of the best time of the year when I see them. Plus, they make the house smell amazing when they are cooking.
Sub Rolls: Subway was and always will be my favourite takeaway chain! Don’t get me wrong, I loved a kebab when I ate meat, but it didn’t hit the spot like a Subway did. And that is all because of the gorgeous, doughy, bread that they made their sandwiches with.
Pitta Bread: Talking of kebabs, there is something super special about a filled pitta. It screams summer BBQs, with meat, lettuce and sauces filling them up. They are also great just on their own too with a dip.
Garlic Bread/Dough Balls: I wouldn’t be a proper Italian child if I didn’t mention one of the gods. Yes, it may make your breath smell, but both of these wonders are worth every bit of it. I loved them so much that I even used to get the snowball dough balls from Pizza Express at Christmas. Everyone goes wild for it when it is brought out and rightly so!
What is your favourite kind of bread lovelies? Have you got a great topping for it? Let me know, as I wanted to find more ways to get creative with mine! I can’t encourage you all enough to try the warm honey bagels though lovelies! They are lush!
