I don’t mean to be a bit of a moaner but I am seriously done with summer! As someone who suffers from SAD in the hotter months, I really struggle to get my body to not get overwhelmed by the heat, change of routine and disturbed sleep! From around May until the end of September, I just can’t seem to make myself really happy and it is a bit rubbish to be honest.
With my anxiety at an all time high, the loss of sleep for both myself and my mum, who really doesn’t do well in temperatures over 20ºC, is something that hits us both the worst. She becomes, and I don’t think she would mind me saying this, absolutely horrible. I fear her on a hot day, as I never know how she is going to be. Therefore, when she says she is going for a middle of the day nap, I am all for it.
Yet, even her bedroom has become too unbearable for her to rest in. A fact that many of us in the UK have found, as a new survey by Bedsure, the online bedding brand, found that 48% of us often have a disturbed night's sleep when it is too hot, with women suffering (54%) more than men (41%). This has led to an 86% increase in tiredness, irritability and a lack of productivity, with 98% of this occurring in 18 to 24-year-olds.
When all these emotions come into play, it of course leads to more arguments, cold showers, separate beds and even nights on the floor to try and bring any sense of comfort. Though many of us are still too reluctant to leave our duvets completely behind, as the lack of soothing and protection it brings can also make it worse. Plus, it does stop the cast of Bug’s Life getting to us too.
