Blogmas Day 12: Upgrade Your Tinsel Game With This DIY Creation

00:00:00

A lot of people have stopped using tinsel on their trees or around their homes, due to the way that it harms the planet! However, w I thought I would share a very economical and planet friendly DIY that you can make at home by recycling old materials and items that you may have lying around! Let that festive creativity come out lovelies!

Good Morning Lovelies,

Growing up, tinsel was the star of the show when it came to my mum decorating our tree and the doorways around our house. I can even recall a special kind that would be pinned to our living room ceiling to drape down. Something that my dad would moan about when it would hit him on the head.

Yet, in recent years, this has changed, as it seems like tinsel has gotten a very bad reputation that has led to it being replaced with other items. Bows and even popcorn garlands have been some items that I have seen instead.

However, they don’t sparkle as much as tinsel did, so I decided to come up with a planet friendly kind that you can recreate at home in no time at all. Using items left around the home, this will make your home sparkle in a very festive way…

Materials

Thin LED Battery Operated Fairy Lights

Old Strips of Differently Coloured Fabric (Any Soft Materials work Well)

Scissors

Fabric Glue or A Hot Glue Gun

Twine, Thin Ribbon, Needle and Thread (Optional)

Method

  1. To start making your garland, use your scissors to cut the different coloured fabrics into strips around 1 inch wide and 6 to 10 inches long.

  2. Once the fabric strips are ready, tie them loosely around each LED bulb light or every few lights to cover them. Make sure that they are spaced evenly to create a tinsel effect.

  3. When all the strips are in place, fluff them a little to give them a fuller look.

  4. Upon being happy with how the strips look, add a small amount of glue to each strip to help stick it to the wire. Then fluff again and wrap around your tree, wreath or railing!

If your tinsel needs a little bit of extra help, you can thread the wire through a thin ribbon or twine first to give it some extra support when hanging on branches or a mantle piece! The possibilities with this are endless but oh so festive lovelies!
