These Were The Best Foods At A Kids Party In The 90s/Early 00s
00:00:00The food that is served at a party seems to always be so much better than when it is made at home! I don’t know why but it does! Especially when it comes to food that we used to have at childhood parties! Cake in a party bag? I think it’s time we bring it back! And all these classic party foods too!
Good Morning Lovelies,
With my birthday having been and gone now, I have to say that I am still feeling in the party mood! Over the past few days, me and my mum have been reflecting a lot on the parties that I had as a kid. From McDonald’s ones to huge gatherings at my house, I have been very lucky.
Yet, the thing that we kept thinking about the most was the party food! Growing up in the UK, there were iconic staples that you just couldn’t have a party without. Some were homemade whilst others were iconic shop brought delights that are still around today.
In honour of turning 30 yesterday, I thought we would continue the birthday celebrations by taking a look back at some iconic 90s/00s birthday party foodie wonders. And yes, there may be a hedgehog involved…
Party Rings: You could not have a party in the 90s and not have these biscuits out on the table! Even now when I see them, I think back to putting them on my little fingers and chowing down. They are a real cult classic on the kids party scene.
A Cheese and Pineapple Hedgehog: My mum would insist on a cheese and pineapple hedgehog at every party. I was never a massive fan of the cheese though, so I would pick all the pineapple pieces off. My dad would help me though, as he would eat them bits to stop us getting into trouble aha!
Cocktail Sausages and Mini Sausage Rolls: Bring out either one of these at a kids party and you are onto an instant hit. There is still riot at kids parties now for a mini sausage. They just taste so much better than a big one.
Panda Pops: Iconic! Sadly no longer with us but a true staple at a kids birthday party in the 90s. You would go to school with a red line around your mouth on Monday morning from the colourings in the cherryade. A sign of a good time to me.
Chicken Poppers/Nuggets: Who doesn’t love a chicken nugget? Even now, they are probably the most popular fast food and rightly so. I can recall and still catch my mum stealing them off a buffet. They just taste so good.
Iced Gems: These little packets could spark joy in even the coldest of hearts. Whip these out at a party and you were the don. The trick to eating these was to bite the icing off the top first and then eat these was to biscuit. If you do it differently that you are wrong again!
Mini Pizzas: Why does everything taste so much better in mini form? Popping these out on a tinfoil plate would bring mania to my parties. It was only ever the ones with the green stuff in them that would be left behind for the adults to eat.
Hula Hoops or Pom Bears: God, I used to love a Pom Bear! Why don’t we have them more as adults? We really should! And the promotion of putting a Hula Hoop on each finger and sucking them off one by one! The only way to eat these party faves!
Mini Swiss Rolls or Iced Top Fairy Cakes: We didn’t ever really have these unless it was a party. The icing on the fairy cakes was always the best bit, with the icing often eaten off and the cake left somewhere else to be cleaned up. As for the mini ja, and vanilla Swiss rolls, I still crave them now at times. Give my dad a packet and he could have eat them all in one go.
And finally, a Colin the Caterpillar or Fondant Character Cake: Ending a birthday party with either a character cake - I always went for Barbie - or a Colin the Caterpillar cake was always a sure fire thing to make the party a success. It was even better when you took a slice home to eat later in your party bag.
What foods did you use to have at your childhood birthday parties lovelies? There are so many more I could have listed but it would have gone on for ages! We would have needed a never ending supply of Party Rings to get to the end of it! Let me know what you all enjoyed as a child in the comments lovelies, as I would love to hear all about them!
