Good Morning Lovelies,
When Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the creators of Six, announced their new show Why Am I So Single?, the excitement was instant. Expectations were high, and after seeing the show at the Garrick Theatre in Leicester Square, I can confidently say it didn’t disappoint. In fact, it’s one of the most fun and relevant theatre shows I’ve seen in a long time.
Right from the start, you can tell this isn’t your typical theatre experience. The show follows two best friends spending time together and trying to work out why they are in fact, so single. It’s a lively, hilarious story of modern love and life, packed with catchy songs and clever witty humour. It’s got the feel of a panto with its use of subtle audience interaction mixed with a musical and a West End production, and the combination works beautifully.
The cast is outstanding. Jo Foster, one of the leads, was a real standout for me. They have an incredible ability to connect with the audience, drawing us in with their warmth and humour. Their performance is both funny and touching, making them a joy to watch. Leesa Tulley, who you might recognise from Six, brings her powerful voice to the stage, and it’s clear why she’s becoming such a well-known name. Her vocal range is stunning, and she delivers each song with real emotion.
Another highlight is Noah Thomas, who many will know from Netflix’s Everything Now. His energy is contagious, and he brings a rhythm and presence to the stage that’s impossible to ignore whilst he always feels so natural. Every time he’s on stage, you can’t help but be drawn to him. His performance is one of the show’s highlights, and it’s clear he’s a star in the making and that he is definitely where he is supposed to be right now.
What makes Why Am I So Single? particularly special is its commitment to diversity. The cast is so varied, representing different races, ages, genders, sexualities, body types, and accents. It’s refreshing to see such a mix on stage, reflecting the world we live in today. This diversity adds a richness to the show that makes it feel authentic and relatable. It was also nice to sit in the audience and feel like yes, I can see myself represented in some way, shape or form (which really isn’t always the case!).
The humour in Why Am I So Single? is another major reason to go and see it. It’s a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, packed with one-liners that had the audience in stitches from beginning to end. But it’s not all slapstick; there are also plenty of witty jokes that sneak up on you when you least expect it. Marlow and Moss have a gift for blending the silly with the smart, creating a comedy that’s both accessible and clever.
Visually, the show is also a treat. The set design, by Moi Tran, and the props, created by Ryan O’Conner and their team, are incredibly imaginative. Without giving too much away, the way they’ve transformed everyday objects like lamps and blankets into part of the set is both impressive and hilarious (you’ll understand when you see it!). It’s these creative touches that make the show feel so unique and engaging.
Why Am I So Single? feels very much of its time, filled with jokes and references that will resonate with millennials and Gen Z in particular. It’s clear that the show is aimed at a specific audience, and while some of the humour might not land with everyone, it’s still a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It’s the kind of show that might date over time, but right now, it’s fresh, funny, and relevant.
Overall, I loved Why Am I So Single?. It’s a brilliant, fun night out at the theatre, full of heart, humour, and a great soundtrack – some of them were absolute bops! If you get the chance to see it, I’d highly recommend it. This is a show that’s sure to leave you smiling long after the curtain comes down.
