The Roses Blu-Ray Review

When you hear that Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch are going to be in a film together, you know that magic is going to happen! Both subtle in their comedy, The Roses is a real British gem that doesn’t always hit the spot but manages to make you smile throughout due to its iconic humour! Find out what I thought of it here!

Good Morning Lovelies,

Hollywood is well-known for producing epic love stories, however, they don’t often tackle them in quite as dramatic a way as The Roses presents! Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, the pair play a couple whose marriage is in no way perfect but secretly had a heart to it that they are trying to rediscover.

Unlike its predecessor, the 2025 version is a pure delight of cast members that will have you shouting at them in recognition, as they appear on screen to tell this dark comedy that hits all the right spots. Cumberbatch plays a struggling architect, who is struggling with the pressures of managing the family home, as his wife (Colman) soars to new heights with her cooking, after being a stay at home mum.

As their roles begin to reverse, the pair’s marriage takes a real hit leading to comical but disastrous outcomes to not only their relationship but their home too. Going for all out revenge, after therapy fails to help them, they soon begin plotting how far and how much they can hurt each other. And hurt each other they do.

However, with a cast as wonderful as this and a script that is so rich in British comedy, you can’t help but secretly love it. Whilst the actions that they undertake put all at risk, watching it all unfold makes you desperate to see what horrors they will come up with next, making it incredibly watchable right up until the end.

Of course, there are plenty of moments that are full on and at times cringy, but they don’t make you want to tune out. Cumberbatch and Colman are able to balance each other out and make sure that where Colman’s well-known comedy skills come out, Cumberbatch’s dry wit equally brings joy. Both of which bring a sense of warmth throughout the shocking actions in an odd way.

Whilst they may not have the perfect on-screen pairing, both leads are fantastic at delivering a great film, which is great to cosy up to on a cold winter night! The Roses may not always be happy, yet, they will bring you a whole lot of joy!
